LIMA — The $5,000 donation a bank gave to the Bradfield Community Center will be used to nearly double the size of the after-school tutoring program, a center official said Monday.

Fifth Third Bank officials met with board members of the center to present the check that will be used to fund and pay for scholarships so more children can use tutoring that boosts academic performance in the classroom, said Dr. Marcus Cox, the president of the center’s board.

“This should cover 15 to 20 students,” Cox said. “We’re looking to help increase us to 20 to 30 students.”

The after-school program hires two teachers to tutor children from kindergarten through sixth grade in math and computers, and to help them with their homework.

“It’s for kids to come after school to have continued education as well as to keep them out of trouble,” Cox said.

Fifth Third spokesman Kenneth Webb said he has been talking with Cox about multiple ways to help the center.

“We were trying to think of ways we could help Bradfield in a tangible way as well as a volunteer way,” he said.

Besides the check, four bank employees volunteered their time teaching a banking class to children in the fourth through sixth grades. Topics such as managing a checking account to the basic steps in starting a business were discussed, Webb said.

Pupils also had the chance to tour Fifth Third Bank’s downtown location. They were shown the operations of the bank during the tour that included a job description for each employee.

“They were able to talk to people and see what they did for a living,” Webb said.

The after-school program has been operating for more than 10 years. Parents of children not eligible for a scholarship are required to pay the tuition.

A few weeks ago, Concerned Christen Men, a local church organization, gave $750 to the program, as well, Cox said.
