VAN WERT — A Spencerville man suffered serious injuries after crashing his motorcycle Thursday in Van Wert County.

James A. Goetz, 41, was traveling west on state Route 116 near milepost 17 at 10:08 p.m. when he drove off the roadway while negotiating a curve, according to the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He came to rest on the edge of a cornfield with the motorcycle on top of him.

Goetz was taken by helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was in stable condition Saturday evening. State Patrol officials said he was not wearing a helmet and they believed alcohol played a role in the accident.
