WAPAKONETA

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Wapakoneta post, is investigating a dumptruck accident that killed the driver.

At 1:02 p.m., first responders were dispatched to milepost 111 near Wapakoneta on Interstate 75. A 1995 Ford L Series dump truck driven by John R. Austin, 39, of Lima, was traveling southbound when the dump bed began to rise. As the truck passed under the Bellefontaine Street overpass, the lifted bed hit the overpass, causing the truck to overturn underneath. The dump bed was torn from the truck and landed in the southbound lanes, which caused a lane closure until 3:45 p.m.

Austin was pronounced dead at the scene by the assistant Auglaize County Coroner. He was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not to be a factor. The accident remains under investigation.

The Wapakoneta Fire Department, Uniopolis Fire Department, St. John's Fire Department and the Auglaize County EMA also responded to the scene.
