LIMA — After 32 years as a judge at Lima Municipal Court, William Lauber said it was time to step down, play some golf and enjoy retirement.

Lauber made the expected announcement in his courtroom filled with court staff, numerous police officers and lawyers he worked with over the years.

“I just could not have done this job without your support and your efforts. It's just been a true pleasure. It is time for me to retire,” he said.

At 64 years old, Lauber said he still has his health and some years to truly enjoy retirement. He and his wife, Karen, plan to move to South Carolina after he retires effective July 31.

“I have been judge for over one half of my life. It doesn't seem possible the journey is about to come to an end but it is,” he said.

Lauber was appointed by Ohio Gov. James Rhodes in May 1982 to replace Judge Roger Andrews. When he started, his pay was $38,000 a year. Today, it's $114,100.
