Thomas Lucente: Santa Claus is real and government knows best

And other fanciful tales

In the last couple of weeks, while debating President Barack Obama's lies about being able to keep your insurance, more than a few liberals made the argument that the millions of plans being dropped were worthless anyway.

I am not making this up.

They really believe that you are too stupid to know what kind of insurance plan you want or need and that they should be allowed to tell you exactly what insurance plan you need and force you to pay through the nose for it.

That is the hubris that marks the liberal mindset. Much like President Bill Clinton's repeated comments in defense of Social Security that you cannot be trusted with your own money.

That line of argument is almost as surreal as honestly believing the president did not lie.

It is plain as the nose on your face.

Obama said, “If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.”

Yet, by the administration's own estimate in 2010, a majority of insurance plans would be dropped because of Obamacare by the end of 2013.

That, my friends, is a lie. No matter how you parse it, it is a lie. No matter what caveats you throw out there, it is a baldfaced lie, just like his claims that Obamacare will cause premiums to go down and it will reduce the deficit because spending billions of dollars on health care subsidies will magically cause the deficit to decrease.

Now Obama and his supporters are lying about the lie. He is on record at least 36 times saying essentially what I quoted above. And he is still trying lie about the lie.

This is why we have the government we have today.

Look how many liberals refused to abandon Clinton when he was caught on videotape committing perjury, an offense that should have sent him to prison. Yet, Democrats defended his behavior because of his political affiliation. I find that despicable.

However, the idea that somehow government bureaucrats know better than I do what is the best insurance coverage for my family is plain silly.

A simple look at record proves this to be true.

Between 2009 and 2012, the federal government posted budget deficits of more than $1 trillion every year — the largest deficits relative to the size of the economy since 1946.

That alone is enough to question the wisdom of government in general and this administration in particular. But there is more.

The national debt has increased by 60 percent under Obama and it is still rising. The federal deficit in just the month of February exceeded the deficit for the entire year of 2007.

Do you comprehend that? Obama borrowed more in February than President George W. Bush did in all of 2007. This makes me laugh when the Obama supporters ask where were the complaints when Bush was spending. Bush was a spendthrift, but he looks like a miser when compared to the current president. Obama is in a whole different league when it comes to irresponsible spending.

Thanks to this 60 percent increase in the debt and trillion-dollar-plus deficits since Obama took office, the annual interest payment on the national debt is now $421 billion, which is more than we pay annually for the Departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, State, Transportation, Treasury, and the Environmental Protection Agency combined.

But it is not just poor spending decisions. The federal government is spending almost $300 billion a year in duplicative and overlapping federal programs each year. One example of this is that the federal bureaucracy has 56 programs in 20 different agencies promoting financial literacy, while the government itself is on the verge of bankruptcy.

In 2012, federal agencies made an estimated $107.7 billion in improper payments.

So I find it patently silly when liberals argue that the millions of people losing insurance simply had substandard plans and that they will be better off under an Obamacare plan despite its significantly higher costs because the administration is so much smarter and knows better than they do about their personal needs.
