LAKEVIEW — A Lakeview man died earlier this month from wounds suffered in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Dennis J. Hansen, 31, of Panama City, Fla., and originally from Lakeview, died Dec. 5 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany. He suffered injuries when insurgents attacked his unit Dec. 3 with an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan’s Logar province.

Hansen is at least the 10th soldier from the region to die in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan this decade. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

He deployed with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team in January in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His previous deployments included 16 months in Afghanistan from February 2006 to June 2007 and four months in Iraq from March to July 2004.

Hansen joined the military in October 1996 after graduating from Indian Lake High School. His wife, Jennifer, and three children, Alana, 10, Gabriel, 7, and Michael, 8 months, survive in Texas. His parents, Dwight and Bonnie Buchenroth Hansen, survive in Bellefontaine.

Hansen’s military awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Indian Lake High School, Lewiston. Friends may call Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Full obituary information can be found on page B2.
