DELPHOS — First year head coach Chris Sommers wants the Wildcats to be physical as they try to follow up a successful 2013 campaign.
Delphos Jefferson plans to replace the graduated running back Zavier Buzard (1,792 yards, 32 touchdowns) with a committee of junior Dalton Hicks and sophomore Hunter Binkley at fullback, while juniors Adam Rode and Mike Cline will man the halfback position.
“We will operate out of the Wing-T and plan to run the ball often,” Sommers said. “We also expect to throw a high percentage of play-action passes with sophomore Jace Stockwell manning the quarterback position.”
The Wildcats return five starters on defense to form a solid nucleus to build around.
Defensive end Jordan McCann returns, along with linebackers Hicks and junior Drew Wannemacher. Trevor Dudgeon and Josh Teman return to anchor the defensive backfield.
Sommers would like to be able to develop enough depth to allow players to only have to play one side of the ball.
To meet the challenge of Northwest Conference action, Sommers says the Wildcats need to continue working hard and having a good work ethic and leadership.
Sommers said being a first-year head coach comes with many challenges, but, having great kids has lessened the challenges.
“I come into the program and want to keep it going in the right direction,” Sommers said. “I want to make sure the guys are prepared to play each week.”
The goals Sommers has set for his team are fairly simple, to contend for the Northwest Conference title and get better each week they take the field.
