LIMA — A police detective said a man accused of beating a woman to death this week confessed to the crime.

Detective Tim Clark of the Lima Police Department made the statement against Hager Church during a bail hearing Thursday in Lima Municipal Court.

Church had little to say.

“I don’t want no bond,” he said, often looking at the floor while shackled and cuffed.

Judge RicKard Workman set bail at $10 million but authorized a 10 percent surety bond. That means if Church wants to leave jail before the trial, he’ll have to come up with $1 million.

Church, 25, is charged with murder in Monday’s slaying of 49-year-old Debra Henderson inside her home at 619 Woodward Ave. She died of head injuries after being beaten to death.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday at Lima Municipal Court.

Church’s case is not his first brush with the law. He was sent to prison in 2003 for attempted aggravated burglary and despite numerous chances that let him out four times in the last seven years, he always ended up back in prison, according to prison records.

Church was released the last time two months ago on June 14, according to prison records.

While Henderson’s death was the city’s first homicide of the year, the second occurred Tuesday in a house at 230 E. Second St. James Christopher Malloy, 32, was found inside his home shot. He died of a single gunshot wound to his head.

No arrests have been made and police were asking for the public’s help in Malloy’s slaying.
