LIMA — A boy who was 13 years old when he raped a 90-year-old woman entered the equivalent of a guilty plea Wednesday to rape and aggravated robbery.
Maurice McGill, now 14, will face being placed in a prison for children until his 21st birthday. He also will receive a sentence of up to 20 years in adult prison that will be placed on hold and maybe never imposed.
The adult sentence only could be imposed if McGill gets in trouble while serving time in the prison for children. The blended sentence is under Ohio’s Serious Youthful Offender law and gives teenagers the chance to get their lives in order.
In exchange for the plea, the prosecution dropped the charges of aggravated burglary and abduction.
Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Chris Steffan said McGill knocked on the woman’s door in the 200 block of Haller Street on Aug. 13, 2011, at 9:30 p.m.
When she answered the door by opening it, McGill forced his way inside and demanded money. The victim told him she had no money, Steffan said.
McGill hit the woman and knocked her to the ground. He then raped her before leaving the home, Steffan said.
“The victim did pursue him for a short while and did take a shot at him,” Steffan said.
The gunshot missed.
Police linked McGill to the crime through DNA analysis. McGill later confessed to the crime.
A date for sentencing has not been scheduled.
