ST. MARYS — More than $5,000 in prize money is up for grabs in the third annual “Get the Carp Outta Here” tournament scheduled for May 17 to 19 at Grand Lake.

The tournament is part of the effort to bring Grand Lake back into ecological balance. Carp and other rough fish are overly abundant in the lake. Reducing the number of carp is one small piece of the plan to improve water quality.

The carp population increases turbidity in the water, making it difficult for native the fish population to breathe and find food, according to the Ohio Division of Natural Resources. Bottom feeding carp also uproot aquatic plants, reduce aquatic habitats and resuspend phosphorus from the lake bottom. The carp themselves also produce a great amount of phosphorus. All of which contribute to blue-green algae growth.

There are prizes for most carp caught in two categories: bait fishing and bow and arrow. Prizes also will be given for the biggest carp caught. The area Kiwanis Clubs is awarding special prizes in categories for children under 16 years old. This year, to add to the fun, there will be 23 tagged carp in the lake, each worth $100. The cost to participate is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 16.

Information can be obtainedby calling 800-860-4726.
