LIMA — Selecting Jefferson Awards recipients is never an easy task for judges, but nominating someone is getting easier.
Nominations for the award honoring outstanding volunteerism can be submitted until noon Feb. 17. New to the local program, in its 10th year, is the ability to nominate online at www.limaohio.com.
Officials from sponsors The United Way of Greater Lima, The Lima News and Your Hometown Lima Stations hope the online nominations will entice more people to nominate.
“We strongly encourage anyone who has somebody who goes above and beyond to nominate those people,” said Jim Shine, publisher of The Lima News.
A panel of 10 local judges will select eight local winners to be honored at a March 23 banquet. Three will advance to the national level, with a national committee choosing one to represent the area at the national ceremony next June in Washington, D.C.
The eight local winners will each receive $350 for the non-profit organization they volunteer with. The nominee going to the national competition will receive an additional $700 for their organization. Retired Allen County Commissioner Alberta Lee will again donate the $3,500 for the monetary awards.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard founded the Jefferson Awards for Public Service in 1972.
Sponsors expect another great group of local nominees this year.
“Every year we have different types of nominations that come in,” said Judy Poling, of the United Way. “The community is very blessed with lots of volunteers who are doing wonderful work.”
“The spirit of volunteerism in this area is truly amazing,” said Kevin Creamer, Your Hometown Lima Stations general manager. “This is a great opportunity to reward those people.”
The local program includes Allen, Auglaize, Putnam, Hardin, Hancock and Van Wert counties. Along with submitting nominations online, they can be mailed to The Jefferson Awards, United Way of Greater Lima, 616 S. Collett St., Lima, OH 45805.
Forms are available at Your Hometown Lima Stations, 1424 Rice Ave.; United Way, 616 S. Collett St., The Lima News, 3515 Elida Road, and the Lima Public Library, 650 W.
