LIMA — A new, upscale steakhouse is in the works downtown, and Mayor David Berger wants Lima City Council to help provide some off-street parking for the establishment.

City Council on Monday will consider a request to allow patrons to John Heaphy’s latest restaurant venture, Old City Prime, to use the city lot at Spring and Main streets on weekends and after 5 p.m. weekdays.

“As you may know from his recent public announcement, John Heaphy and partners have declared their intention to develop a new fine dining restaurant in downtown Lima,” Berger wrote in a letter to councilors. “The establishment will be at 218 S. Main St. and will be called Old City Prime featuring a steak and seafood menu. Renovations of the building are already underway.”

Berger said the parking agreement with Heaphy’s business will be similar to the long-standing agreement that was previously in place between the city and Main Street Bistro.

“The right time to open this restaurant is now,” Heaphy said earlier this week in announcing plans for the restaurant. “I’ve been looking at doing this for three years, and with all of the momentum going on in downtown Lima, the potential for a fine dining restaurant is as good as it has been in years.”

Current plans call for an opening date in September.

In other business, City Council will consider a request to spend up to $3,000 from the Safety Service Support Program fund on new workout equipment for the Lima Police Department. Members of City Council’s Safety Service Committee, which oversees requests to utilize the fund, unanimously supported the request at a meeting last week.
