LIMA — Bail for two men charged with murder in the city’s most recent homicide was set at $1 million Tuesday as they begin their journey through the justice system.

Randell Howard Jr., 19, and Mikel Johnson, 18, appeared at a bond hearing Tuesday at Lima Municipal Court. Judge William Lauber scheduled a preliminary hearing for each man for July 11.

Both men told Lauber they did not have any means to hire an attorney. Lauber told each man an attorney would be assigned for the next hearing.

The men are charged in the June 24 slaying of Joshua Davenport, 20.

Davenport was shot multiple times and died during the early morning hours. Police were called to the 700 block of Albert Street at 5:30 a.m. on a report of shots fired.

Davenport was found in a nearby alleyway. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police first charged Tayvon Brown, who police labeled as “a person of interest” in Davenport’s death, with an obstruction charge but that was dismissed and he was set free.
