LIMA — A 21-year-old man is in police custody, accused of shooting a rifle across South Elizabeth Street at a group of females late Saturday.
Officer Dustin Brotherwood, of the Lima Police Department, said Datrion L. Downton has been charged with suspicion of felonious assault.
Brotherwood said officers patrolling the area around Vine and Elizabeth streets heard several gunshots at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. As they were trying to pinpoint where the shots came from, dispatchers got a call reporting a man shooting a gun in the 700 block of South Elizabeth Street.
Witnesses there told police the shooter ran down the street and into 764 S. Elizabeth St. Officers surrounded the home, and after a short time Downton came out.
He first denied any involvement, but later told police he was firing the gun into the air. Witnesses told police Downton was shooting at a group of females who were across the street from him.
No one was injured.
Police found a .22-caliber rifle inside 764 S. Elizabeth St., Brotherwood said.
Online records list Downton as the owner of the property.
