Lima schools join countywide healthy initiative

LIMA ó Lima schools is joining a county-wide effort to encourage residents to live healthier. The Lima school board approved a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday for the district to implement The Small Communities Transformation Grant.



Activate Allen County was one of 40 initiatives nationwide and the only in Ohio to receive funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionís Small Communities Transformation grant. The local initiative received $1.2 million.



The goal is to create sustainable strategies that will reduce health disparities and expand clinical and community preventive service. The two-year effort will focus on tobacco-free living, active living and healthy eating, social and emotional wellness, high impact quality clinical preventative serves and healthy and safe physical environments.



Lima schools will assign staff members to assist with the effort and will work with the development, implementation and evaluation of a district transformation plan. The grant will provide training and technical assistance in many areas, including improving the nutritional quality of food available at schools, the availability and affordability of healthful foods in the workplace, and the quality of physical activity.
