VAN WERTTwo tractor-trailers and a car collided around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Route 224 west of Van Wert. The Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Gurcharan Benipal, 57, of New Jersey, was eastbound on Route 224 near Bergner Road in Harrison Township and failed to maintain a safe distance when his 1999 Freightliner ran into the rear of a Chevy Rendezvous driven by Robert Gordon, 73, of Van Wert. The impact forced Gordon’s car into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer driven by Ryan Cummings, 35, of Sheridan, Ind. The wreckage blocked both lanes of U.S. 224, forcing the Ohio Department of Transportation to close the highway for about three hours.Gordon and a passenger were taken to Van Wert County Hospital, where they were treated, then released. All occupants were wearing seat belts, troopers said. Alcohol was not a factor.
