Celina man jailed; accused of abusing 4-month-old child

CELINA — A Celina man remained jailed Monday after the story on how his girlfriend’s 4-month-old baby suffered injuries didn’t add up to authorities.


John Dziengelewski, 28, of Celina, was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail in the Mercer County Adult Detention Facility on a felonious assault charge, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.


The Sheriff’s Office received a call at 7:18 p.m. Saturday from Children’s Medical Center, Dayton, about suspicious injuries to a 4-month-old baby. The child’s mother originally took the child to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, which later transferred the child to Dayton.


An investigation showed Dziengelewski originally reported he watched the child Saturday and fell while holding the baby. Authorities said the child’s injuries didn’t match his account.


Deputies received a search warrant for Dziengelewski’s home at 2115 state Route 29, where the injuries occurred.


Dziengelewski was originally taken to the Montgomery County Jail but returned to Celina after waiving extradition.
