LIMA — A former Allen Correctional Institution guard who was involved in a relationship with an inmate was sentenced to 30 days jail Friday.

Patricia A. Gooding, 46, of Lima, was sentenced to 90 days jail with 60 days suspended on the condition she behave. She also was fined $250.

“We’re not talking just about phone calls. We’re talking about bringing items into the prison and having a relationship with a prisoner,” Lima Municipal Judge William Lauber said.

Lauber also ordered Gooding to have no contact with the inmate as long as he is incarcerated.

Gooding pleaded guilty in February to dereliction of duty, a second-degree misdemeanor.

She was placed on administrative leave Sept. 23 following the discovery of the crime. She resigned from her job in January. Her annual base salary was $43,000.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Gooding was involved in an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Investigators found a cell phone connected to Gooding inside an inmate’s cell.

Gooding was hired into the state prison system Oct. 16, 1995, as a psychiatric attendant at Northwest Developmental Center in Toledo. She transferred less than a year later to Oakwood Correctional Facility where she remained until transferring to ACI in 2007.
