LIMA — Two very visible Dominion pipeline replacement projects in the city are wrapping up and others in the region are about to begin, company spokeswoman Peggy Ehora said this week.

Dominion will soon complete all but the grass reseeding for replacement projects begun in 2012 on West Market Street from Beer Barrel to Glenwood Avenue and also in the Woodlawn Avenue, Lakewood Avenue and West Elm Street areas.

“Those projects are winding down,” Ehora said. “We’re not done. We’re coming back. The final restoration is weather driven. We need sustained good weather to plant the grass seed.”

When customers see piles of dirt with straw, they sometimes believe the project has ended, when it has not. Environmental regulations require that Dominion temporarily stabilize a project until it can be completed. The company also does this by placing burlap mats on the sewer grates to reduce construction runoff into sewers, Ehora said.

On April 8, Dominion will begin two new pipe infrastructure replacement projects, one in St. Marys and the other in the Hazel Avenue-Metcalf Street area, Ehora said. The Lima project will take about 40 business days to complete, affecting 245 customers and include 8,000 feet of new pipe.

Between last year and this year Dominion is making a $15 million investment in Lima’s gas line infrastructure, Ehora said.

Statewide, the project will take another 15 to 20 years to complete, and Lima and West Central Ohio will continue to see projects during that length of time, Ehora said.

As part of a Pipeline Infrastructure Replacement program, Dominion is replacing natural gas pipe. During the 25-year program, the company is upgrading the pipe from a bare-steel, cast iron, wrought iron and copper pipe to either effectively coated steel or plastic pipe. This will typically affect the main, which is usually in the street, and various service lines, which run from the main to the gas meter.
