CELINA - A Tier III sex offender that officials sought turned himself in Friday morning in Muncie, Ind., Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced.
Mailek Hason Sharpe, 26, turned himself in to the Ball State University Police Department in Delaware County, Ind., at 2:46 a.m. Friday.
Extradiction proceedings are in place with the U.S. Marshal’s Office to bring Sharpe back to Ohio, Grey said. He credited media attention with bringing Sharpe into custody.
“Apparently the media attention that Mr. Sharpe was getting caused him to turn himself in,” Grey said in a press release. “As soon as the media outlets ran the story that we were looking for him, tips started coming in with at least one reporting he was in Muncie. This is what can happen when law enforcement, the media and the public work together.”
Celina Police Department held active misdemeanor warrants for aggravated menacing and telephone harassment. The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office had a felony bench warrant for violation of community control sanctions and a third-degree felony indictment for failing to register. A conviction for failure to register carries a minimum mandatory sentence of two years under Ohio Law.
