BEAVERDAM - Family members of a deceased newborn baby are requesting that their pet pit bull be euthanized for killing the child. Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer said the dog remained alive, pending instructions from law enforcement.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the death of a 3-day-old baby killed by the family dog on May 17.

Sheriff investigators have one more witness to interview before concluding the investigation. The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office for review, Allen County Sheriff Chief Deputy Jim Everett said. Everett said it will be up to the prosecutor’s office on whether any criminal charges are filed.

Makayla Darnell died from injuries after being mauled by the family dog. The baby was in the living room of a Thayer Road home, just north of Beaverdam, when the dog attacked her, Everett said.
