OTTAWA — Don Croy, of Ottawa, would like to create an area along the Blanchard River as a site for emergency and recreational purposes. He is coordinating a day of service to create this space.“I love the river and I hate the river,” said Croy, owner of Croy’s Mowing. He lives near the river and has coped with the numerous flooding problems in past years. He said, however, the river can provide a positive spot for the community and region.Croy’s Mowing is organizing a day of service with the help of the village of Ottawa, Walmart and the Blanchard River Watershed Partnership. They are encouraging more than 20 volunteers to the former Arrowhead Park along U.S. Route 224, on Earth Day, April 23, to clean up along the river to provide a nice spot for fishing, walks along the river and other leisure activities. The area was purchased by the village using federal and state grant money. Certain restrictions apply to the use of the land because it was purchased using government funds.“We are also intending to establish a safe area for river access for emergency vessels, canoes, and kayaks,” Croy said. The first 20 volunteers to call and register will receive a T-shirt from Croy’s Mowing. Water, hot dogs and chips will be provided by Walmart.Arrowhead Park is on the west side of Ottawa at the bridge. Volunteers are asked to arrive on-site at 9 a.m. To register call 419-523-5884.Croy is a member of The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), a national lawn and landscape association, which is holding a day of service on Earth Day. Members of PLANET are organizing volunteer lawn and landscape projects.
