WAPAKONETA — A Wapakoneta woman discovered a hand grenade in her bushes Tuesday night, prompting local police and the Allen County Bomb Squad to come to her residence.

Wapakoneta police were dispatched to the 400 block of Court Street around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Officers determined the item likely was a grenade. They called the Allen County Bomb Squad, which took the grenade to the Wapakoneta Police range and detonated it.

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock said the pin was still inside the grenade, but there was no way of knowing how long it had been sitting in the woman’s backyard.

“It was partially buried in the ground. We are not able to determine how long it had been there,” Hunlock said.

The woman was doing yard work when she discovered it.

“She was actually doing some spring cleaning around her bushes and underneath them,” he said.

Wapakoneta police did not identify the woman or provide her exact address. Authorities were trying Wednesday to determine how the grenade got there. The incident remains under investigation.

Russ Decker of the Allen County Bomb Squad did not immediately have any comment regarding the incident.
