LIMA — Increased costs and a decline in enrollment will mean higher tuition at Rhodes State College next school year.

The board of trustees approved a 2 percent tuition increase at its Tuesday meeting. The increase will begin in the fall. It

amounts to an additional $3 per credit hour.

“Operating costs are on the rise, and doing a modest 2 percent, we don’t put it on the backs of students,” President

Debra McCurdy said.

Rhodes saw an 18 percent decline in enrollment of full-time students in fall 2012 and a 10 percent decline of students

overall. McCurdy said a decline is not uncommon when schools transition from quarters to semesters as Rhodes did this

year.

“This is our year, and we are looking to see the recovery now in enrollment with some new outreach and marketing

strategies,” she said. McCurdy believes enrollment will bounce back following this adjustment school year.

Rhodes increased tuition 4 percent in the summer. Students saw a 2 percent increase in the 2010-11 school

year but did not see an increase the previous four years.

Chris Schmidt, treasurer and vice president of business, said 80 percent of two-year institutions in Ohio have been

forced to raise tuition because of enrollment, technology, health expenses and underlying operating expenses.

“Two year schools have continued to be on the low end of tuition, and we are trying to stay there,” McCurdy said. “So, 2

percent is a very modest amount to increase tuition on an annual basis.”

Board Chairman Dr. Wilfred Ellis said the 2 percent is reasonable and still puts the school below other tuitions.

“The end result is we are still much less per credit hour than a four-year institution,” Ellis said.

OSU-Lima students will not see their tuition rise this year. OSU President E. Gordon Gee said tuition for undergraduate, in-state students would be frozen next school year.
