LIMA — A 51-year-old man who raped a 9-year-old boy seven years ago had nothing to say, not even an apology for his victim, who sat just feet away in the courtroom Wednesday.“Normally the court would wonder why you wouldn’t say anything but in this case there is nothing you can say that would change anything,” said Judge Richard Warren before sentencing John Stemen to 10 years in prison.Stemen was convicted of rape and gross sexual imposition.Warren told Stemen he was a sick individual who used his relationship with a former girlfriend to get close to her son to commit the crimes.Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Alissa Sterling appeared disgusted by the crimes as she told the judge sex offenses against children are some of the worst she sees.“It’s hard to fathom to understand why people do the things they do,” she said. “It’s quite disturbing that they would occur at all.”The victim, who reported the crimes six years after the fact, continues to suffer today, Sterling said.Stemen’s attorney, Joe Benavidez, said Stemen accepted responsibility for his actions and confessed to police to help officers make a case against him.“He has been honest and remorseful. He really can’t give a reason what drove him to this,” Benavidez said.
