LIMA — With the closest Military Order of the Purple Heart chapters in Defiance, Kenton, and Findlay, a Bluffton veteran has been taking steps to establish a chapter in Lima.
While Will Thompson has been involved in several veterans organizations, he thought there was a particular need for a group specifically for combat-wounded vets in west central Ohio.
“It’s our own little community amongst ourselves. It’s just a way to share our camaraderie. The mission of the order is to take care of all veterans and the community they live in,” said Thompson, 38, of Bluffton.
The new post is named after a fallen soldier, Nathan B. Carse, of Harrod, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011.
Thompson is looking for enough new members to become a nationally recognized chapter. He welcomes any Purple Heart veteran to join the group, which is free for members.
In addition to the camaraderie, Chapter 1612 will assist veterans with paperwork, filling out forms with Veterans Affairs, and any other information veterans may need. They will soon begin monthly meetings at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 on Elm Street.
Thompson is already a Veterans Affairs volunteer service officer, and he sees this group as another way to assist veterans.
“Since I can no longer be in the military,” Thompson said, “I feel my purpose now is to serve my fellow veterans.”
