ROCKFORD — A man wanted for a murder that happened almost two months ago was arrested Wednesday, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reported Daniel Charles Martin, 40, was apprehended Wednesday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Martin is wanted for the Nov. 8 murder of Melinda S. Shinn, 26, who was shot and killed inside her Rockford home at 509 North St. with her 9-year-old son in the house at the time. Martin, who was suspected to be Shinn’s live-in boyfriend, fled the scene and the county following the shooting.

The following day, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office requested the U.S. Marshal’s Service’s assistance in locating Martin. Grey said for the last several days, deputy U.S. Marshals and sheriff’s deputies have been tracking Martin, until they  found him Wednesday morning in the home he was staying in Fort Wayne. He was taken into custody without further incident.

“We are very grateful for the U.S. Marshal Service assistance,” Grey said. “Without their help and unique tracking capabilities, we would still be looking for Mr. Martin. This is a great example of how federal and local agencies can and should work together.”

Also found in the home was an AK 47 assault rifle, which was seized. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is still investigating the ownership of the rifle.

“This fugitive investigation was one of our top priorities and we immediately added Martin to our most wanted Dangerous Dozen list,” said Andrew Deserto, U.S. Marshal Northern District of Ohio Assistant Chief Deputy. “We were able to safely bring this dangerous fugitive into custody and remove another deadly weapon from the hands of a criminal.”

Grey said Martin will be brought back to Ohio to face the charge of murder, but he was unsure of when he will be brought back due to Indiana’s extradition laws. He is currently being held in the Allen County, Ind., Jail.
