OTTAWA — One of Ohio's first two confirmed cases of West Nile Virus this year is in Putnam County, according to the Ohio Department of Health and Putnam County Health Department.A 14-year-old boy in Putnam County was confirmed Tuesday with West Nile Virus fever but was not hospitalized. A case of West Nile Virus meningitis was confirmed in a 19-year-old woman who was hospitalized in Cuyahoga County. Both teenagers were recovering, according to the state.Health officials cannot confirm where or how the boy contracted West Nile Virus, Putnam County Health Department Nursing Director Sherri Recker said, because of the boy's travel history. Cases are tracked by county of residence. The boy was never hospitalized. West Nile Virus is not contagious.Putnam County does not do mosquito pool testing, but Recker said the county has not had reports of dead birds, especially crows or blue jays.“The important thing is prevention. It works well for everyone. Take measures to prevent bites and eliminate mosquito pools,” Recker said. “It is mosquito season, and it's been wetter out. The mosquitoes are out. Every year we encourage prevention.”The number of West Nile Virus-positive mosquito pools in Ohio have increased from 52 to 450 during the month of August. Because humans most often get West Nile Virus from the bite of an infected mosquito, the Ohio Health Department reminded residents to take steps to help prevent infection.“We see human cases of West Nile virus each year in Ohio,” said ODH Director Ted Wymyslo. “You can protect yourself and your loved ones from West Nile by taking simple preventive steps, such as using insect repellent and eliminating containers that can collect water from your property.”You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
