LIMA — A workout room at the Lima Police Department may soon get some new equipment for the first time in more than a decade.

Members of Lima City Council’s Safety Service Committee on Monday recommended a proposal to allow the police department to utilize up to $3,000 from a specially designated fund for the purchase. The equipment will replace old, worn out pieces of exercise equipment that are no longer serviceable, according to Maj. Angel Cortes, of the Lima Police Department.

“Obviously the job of the police department is to provide the best possible services to the citizens of Lima,” Cortes said. “In order to carry out that responsibility, I feel it’s important that each employee maintain a reasonable level of fitness. This is something we need to have to be able to achieve that.”

Money for the purchase would come from a special safety service fund, not the city’s general fund, where over the years money has been designated for the police and fire departments.

“It’s for specific items the general fund will not cover,” 2nd Ward Councilor Sam McLean said. “This kind of fits that bill.”

Seventh Ward Councilor Paige Townsend said she was supportive of the request but that the general public may have questions about using the funds for workout equipment.

“It is important, but it is more marginal than masks for the fire department or vests or whatever we see go through council’s ordinances,” Townsend said. “I believe it is important. I don’t know that the public will be as convinced, but I’m a fitness person to begin with so this is very important.”

Law Director Tony Geiger said he would have legislation prepared for next week’s meeting for the full City Council to consider the purchase.
