LIMA — The Lima Police Department has taken a man into custody in connection with an incident that occurred Dec. 27 in the 1100 block of Catalpa Avenue in Lima.

On Dec. 27, James E. Gipson, 29, of Lima, entered a residence in the 1100 block of Catalpa Avenue around 8:25 p.m. with a weapon in order to commit an aggravated robbery, Lima police reported in late December.

Upon entry, Gipson assaulted two of the residents and a violent struggle ensued between the three. Sometime during that struggle, Gipson was stabbed.

He then ran from the Catalpa Avenue house and made it to his residence in the 1100 block of Holmes Avenue, just one street over, before he collapsed in his front yard.

Gipson was taken to Lima Memorial Health System, where he died. The other two residents, whose identities are not being released, were also taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center. They were treated and released, detectives said.

Police have now arrested Charles E. “C.J.” McGuire Jr., 30, of Lima. He was wanted for aggravated burglary in connection with that incident, according to police.

Detectives did not comment on what his connection was with the incident.

Detectives said in late December they were still working to finish the investigation to see if any other people were involved or if any charges needed to be pressed. Detectives said they would more than likely present the case to a grand jury who would determine charges, if any, would be pressed.

Lima detectives are still requesting if anyone has any information, to contact the Lima Police Department Detective Bureau at 419-221-5293.

Gipson’s death marked the sixth and final homicide for 2012.
