LIMA — Sitting before a judge who is about to decide how long you go to prison is not the best time to lie.

Although the lie probably didn’t matter much for Robert Manley III as he was sentenced to seven years in prison, Judge Jeffrey Reed made it clear he wasn’t going to get away with it.

The 18-year-old Manley was sentenced on the charge of aggravated robbery with a gun for robbing a woman Aug. 4. The woman left a home on the city’s east side and was attempting to get into her car when two men approached with guns and robbed her.

Reed wanted to know where Manley — who is not licensed to carry a concealed weapon and who cannot legally own the gun — got the gun.

Manley told Reed he found the gun on the street while walking.

“Now come on. You think I’m that stupid? You just didn’t find the gun on the street,” Reed said.

Manley insisted he had.

“I don’t believe it for one minute. Is there a bunch of guns laying out there on the street for anyone walking to pick up? Be honest,” Reed said.

Reed continued to press Manley, finally cracking him. Manley said he bought it off someone to use for protection.

Reed reminded him it was used for a crime, not protection. He then asked Manley how he and his partner in crime chose the woman.

Manley said he didn’t know why she was chosen.

Police later recovered the guns that were used in the crimes, said Jennifer King, an assistant Allen County prosecutor.

Manley’s partner in crime, Quintez Burns, 18, was sentenced to eight years in prison.
