LIMA —The stabbing of a police officer at the front door of the Lima Police Department will not affect an ongoing discussion about security at the Municipal Building, Mayor David Berger said Thursday.

“They are completely separate,” Berger said.

City Council and the administration have been discussing the lack of staffing at the city building’s entrance and reception area. They have had ongoing conversations, spurred by 3rd Ward Councilman Jesse Lowe, about security in the building. The discussions have included a wide variety of options, including paid staff and volunteers. The recent conversations have happened during executive sessions with City Council.

“We do have discussions under way about improvements here,” Berger said. “But what happened at the police department is completely separate from the security of this building.”

The review of the incident will include a discussion about any possible ways to make the police department safer, Police Chief Kevin Martin said.
