KENTON — Two Lima men are facing felony charges over an incident last week in which one of the men reportedly tried to run over a sheriff’s deputy.
Rashad A. Lott, 22, is charged with felonious assault in the incident. Andre R. Lewis, 20, is charged with trafficking in cocaine, a spokeswoman for the Hardin County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Both men had their initial appearance hearing Tuesday in Hardin County Municipal Court.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday at municipal court. The judge will decide whether there’s enough evidence to send the case to a grand jury for consideration.
The incident happened May 22 in Ada when undercover officers were conducting a drug operation. Officers were preparing to take the men into custody when officials said Lott jumped into the car and tried to get away.
A sheriff’s detective, who Sheriff Keith Everhart has not named, was struck by the vehicle and pinned between the vehicle and a parking pole.
The detective pulled his gun and fired one shot at the car. The fleeing suspect was not hit, Everhart said.
Officers in marked cruisers were able to stop the car before it got out of the parking lot at the Marathon gas station on Main Street at state Route 81 in Ada, Everhart said.
The detective was taken to the hospital where he was examined and treated for minor injuries. The detective was placed on paid leave, which is standard procedure anytime an officer is involved in a shooting.
