OTTAWA — Emilee Drerup gets people spinning at the Putnam County YMCA. The Ottawa-Glandorf High School senior teaches a cycling class twice a week.“I started taking spinning class last spring and I sort of got into it. You work with changing resistance on the stationary bikes, so you can make it as easy or as hard as you want. I like it because it goes fast. We work to music, and you stand and sit and do minute sprints.”Drerup said she enjoys the workout. “You get a pretty good cardio workout using your legs and your core,” she said.Besides teaching spinning, Drerup performs a few other fitness and aquatic jobs at the YMCA. She works as a lifeguard, swimming instructor, and Wellness Center attendant.“I like all the different jobs. I started as a lifeguard at the Leipsic Swimming Pool, but sometimes I work at the indoor pool during the winter, and I’m a water safety instructor, so I teach swimming lessons. I’m also a certified adopted aquatics instructor, which is swimming lessons for children with disabilities. It’s really fun.”Drerup said she always has enjoyed swimming.“We have a big pond in our neighborhood, so I grew up swimming,” she said. When she isn’t working at the YMCA, she likes to go there just for fun.“It’s a hobby for me, and I plan to major in athletic training and hopefully get a doctorate in physical therapy,” she said. “I’d like to work at a school.”Drerup said her interest has come from experience.“When I was in soccer, I got hurt, so I had to see our trainer, Amy Utendorf, and I thought her job was pretty cool,” she said. For St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Glandorf, Drerup played Catholic Youth Organization basketball. At Ottawa-Glandorf, Drerup volunteers as an aide in the athletic office and is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, chorale, senior stage crew, and Spanish Club.“Last summer, some of us in Spanish Club went to Costa Rica,” she said. “We toured the country for nine days. It was pretty exciting. I really liked zip lining through the rainforest. You’re up pretty high, gliding across the forest on a cord. That was such a cool experience to see everything from above.”
