LIMA - The Lima school board approved a high school diploma Thursday for World War II veteran Ralph G. Washam.

Ohio Senate Bill 75 allows schools to grant diplomas to World War II veterans who left school to serve during the war.

Washam, who died in 2010, moved to Lima as a teenager. He did not enroll in a Lima school, but found work in the area. At age 18, he joined the United States Army.

He entered active service on March 29, 1943 and received an honorable release from active duty on December 24, 1945. His last rank was private first class.

Washam’s son, Terry C. Washam, accepted the diploma.
