VAN WERT - Van Wert Police are investigating whether any criminal activity took place during an outdoor barbecue at Vantage Career Center on Friday.

According to a news release from Police Chief Joel Hammond, four people became ill and were taken by Van Wert Fire Department EMS to Van Wert County Hospital. All were treated and released, Hammond said.

As a precaution, 16 other students were taken by school staff to the hospital, where they were also treated and released, Hammond said.

Hammond said the incident is being reviewed to ensure no criminal activity was involved.

No additional information was immediately available. Van Wert Police referred all questions to Hammond, who was not available for comment.
