WAPAKONETA — Happy Daz Restaurants broke ground on its first location outside Allen County, its owner announced Wednesday.

A new Happy Daz will open at the corner of Lincoln Avenue (state Route 501) and Defiance Street (state Route 198) in Wapakoneta in spring 2014. It’s the former site of St. Joseph Catholic School.

The new restaurant will employ an estimated 35 people.

The company, known for its hamburgers and nostalgic decorations, currently has four locations in Lima, with restaurants on Bellefontaine Avenue, Cable Road, Elida Road and West Street.

It won’t be owner John Heaphy’s first foray into Auglaize County. In February 2012, another one of Heaphy’s restaurants, Beer Barrel Pizza and Grill, opened in St. Marys.

The new restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It includes a large, retro-style dining room and a drive-through, according to a press release from Good Food Hospitality Management LLC.

Good Food Hospitality Management also includes four Beer Barrel locations in Lima, Findlay and St. Marys; Smokin’ BBQ & Fixin’s in Lima; and the under-construction Old City Prime restaurant in downtown Lima.

Happy Daz opened its first location in 1985. In the Best of the Region 2013 reader vote in The Lima News, it ranked second in the region for best fast food restaurant; third for best hamburgers; and honorable mention for best breakfast and best French fries.
