DELPHOS — By the look of what was in folks’ carts as they emerged from the Chief grocery store, high on the hunkering down supply list is 24-pack cubes of Mountain Dew.The shopping center was busy Saturday afternoon as shoppers stocked up for the rest of the snowy weekend, snuck in some Christmas shopping, and ran errands trying to stay ahead of the worsening weather.Snow, sleet and freezing rain was expected overnight, rapidly intensifying with additional accumulations of 6 to 15 inches of snow possible, with wind and blizzard conditions.Today, more snow is expected with 3 to 5 inches possible, mainly before 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. A north wind of between 20 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 mph will blow snow across roads, making travel hazardous. Tonight, temperatures are expected to dip into the teens. As the sun went down and snow continued Saturday, busy drivers found themselves sliding off the roads, ending up in ditches and other minor accidents, area police dispatchers reported. As of Saturday evening, no major injury accidents had been reported.During the day, a little snow didn’t deter many.At the ACE Delphos Hardware Co., Roger Schlerth bought, what else, a shovel.“My old one just gave out,” he said. “It was 15 years old.”Shovels were hot items, hardware store owner Eric Fritz said. Along with salt, sandbags, hats, gloves, boots and snowblowers.“People are renting Bobcats and even coming in getting things to do projects in their homes if they’re going to be stuck inside,” Fritz said.Norma Violet left the Chief with her great-niece, Holly Dellinger, with groceries for the weekend. They’d been out getting supplies for a Christmas box to send to Violet’s son in Oregon and they were headed home before the country lane Violet lives became impassable. When she was younger, Violet had a better solution for getting around in the snow. She used to own a horse.
