LIMA — For a while, it looked as if Tim McPheron would win his battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in July of last year. He had surgery around Christmas and a scan in March showed no cancer, his stepbrother Chad Brian said.
The 41-year-old father of five and grandfather of one went back to his job at Time Warner Cable.
Then McPheron began losing weight, to the point he needed a feeding tube around mid-June. When putting the tube in, doctors found inoperable cancer, Brian said.
McPheron’s receiving hospice care, and wife Susan is at his side. His father has come up from Florida.
“Her family medical leave has run out,” Brian said. McPheron missed a good deal of work over the last year as he fought the disease. “It’s just caused things to pile up and caused a lot of expenses for him.”
To help with those expenses, a benefit will be held Saturday at the Moose Lodge, 2929 N. West St.
Registration for a cornhole tournament starts at 12:30 p.m. A poker run starts at 1 p.m. Live bands start at 3 p.m. There also will be a 50/50 drawing and a raffle. There are restaurant gift certificates, oil changes, a three-person Lake Erie charter and a live performance by 3 Stools and a Bar.
“We’ve had all kinds of donations come in from local busineses,” Brian said.
For information call 419-909-0099. Donations to the McPheron family benefit can be made at any Superior Federal Credit Union location.
