LIMA — The Knights of Columbus Loyalty Council 2661 has closed the bar and restaurant side of its South Cable Road Family Center but is honoring banquet room bookings already made through 2014.

The council took a vote on the move Monday night, council Grand Knight Steve Kesner said, and a sign appeared on the facility door Tuesday. The move generated rumors around town Tuesday. An unrelated accident on Shawnee Road took out the facility’s phone line temporarily during the day, Kesner said, adding fuel to the fire.

“We want to get the proper information out,” he said. “Obviously, word is spreading like wildfire today. The decision we made affects only the bar and restaurant side. The vote was to close the club side because of a money issue. Of course, we hope it’s temporary. With our current money situation, we have to be able to build a cushion back up to reopen.”

Rumors have circulated about the financial stability of the facility. Recently, the bar/restaurant side closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Kesner said if members are not using the club side enough, the facility loses money.

The Knights of Columbus broke ground on the 20,000-square-foot $1.2 million facility in August 2003, and its construction was completed in March 2004. Just southwest of Lima Central Catholic High School, the facility was labeled as a gathering place for Catholic families. The Council had planned for the center five years before its construction and originally intended to build it on a piece of land it owned on Cole Street. That land was sold when LCC approached the organization about building near the school.

The Council hasn’t yet decided if it will take on future business on the banquet side, Kesner said. If people book events in the future, they will be allowed to use another caterer. The facility previously had required those using it to buy from the Knights of Columbus kitchen.
