LIMA — Lima police suspect that a Lima man who was transported for a shooting accidentally shot himself while trying to reach for his gun Thursday afternoon.
Michael Swanger, 26, of Lima, was taken to Lima Memorial Health System Thursday afternoon about 4 p.m. after police responded to 352 E. Kibby St. for reports of a shooting.
Lima Police Det. Steve Stechschulte said an investigation revealed Swanger accidentally discharged his gun Thursday and he was not shot by another person.
“He shot himself,” Stechschulte said. “He’s still claiming someone broke into his house, but he had a gun in his waistband and they were moving out. It was an accidental discharge. He pointed the gun because he thought someone was in the house and then he shot himself.”
Swanger shot himself in the leg once. His injuries were not life threatening, Lima Police Det. Scott Leland said Thursday.
That may explain why nearby neighbors, such as Laura Biederman and Jim Biederman, didn’t hear any commotion.
“I thought it was weird because it looked like he was moving out earlier today. They had a U-Haul in the driveway and they were carrying out a stove and appliances, it looked like,” Laura Biederman said. “But I thought, ‘Man he hadn’t been here long,’ because he just moved in at the beginning of the summer. Nobody stays long in that house. Nobody.”
Lima Memorial Health System did not release information on his condition.
