SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Since the village of Fort Shawnee was dis-incorporated almost six months ago, the posted speed limits on its roads technically weren’t valid.

That all changed Wednesday after Allen County Commissioners approved new speed limits on county roads at their weekly meeting. The Allen County Engineer’s Office helped.

Most speed limits will be at 45 mph — including Breese, Buckeye and McClain roads and most of South Dixie Highway. South Dixie Highway between Fourth Street and the railroad underpass will have a 35 mph speed limit.

“We worked with the Lima-Allen County Regional Planning Commission, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Shawnee Township to establish safe speeds for the traveling public,” said Ron Meyer, Engineer’s Office planning engineer.

Meyer said, according to the Ohio Revised Code, the default speed limit technically had been 55 mph since the village dissolved late in 2012. But the old Fort Shawnee speed limit signs still were posted.

One of the biggest changes is on Breese Road, which previously had a 35 mph speed limit. In 2011, The Lima News readers ranked Breese Road in Fort Shawnee the best place to get a speeding ticket in the Best of the Region survey.

Meyer said it was a trickier situation for local law enforcement.

“They’ve just been issuing warnings for the time being, since it was kind of a gray area, since all old speed limits were still up,” Meyer said.

“Any time there were confusing circumstances … we gave warnings,” said Sgt. Shane Hartman, with Shawnee Township Police Department. “There were a lot of places had been questionable for us. We work under state law and not village law.”

New speed limit signs began to go up Wednesday. All likely will be updated by the end of the week.

Shawnee Township officials will approve speed limits this month on newly acquired township roads.
