LIMA‚??For the second time since St. Rita‚??s Medical Center began its emergency department renovation and expansion, PotashCorp has put up funds to help it along.

The latest donation, $170,000, makes a new and improved first responders area possible.

‚??This was really unexpected. We are nothing but pleased that they were able to support the project in this unexpected manner,‚?Ě St. Rita‚??s President Bob Baxter said Friday. ‚??The ability for Potash and others to support us financially makes many things possible that otherwise would not be possible.‚?Ě

Potash donated $100,000 last year for the main waiting area in the emergency department.

‚??St. Rita‚??s treats so many patients, so much support for the people in the community as well as the businesses, we feel fortunate that at this time we are able to help support them,‚?Ě said Todd Sutton, company general manager.

The first responders area was the result of feedback the medical center received from responders, Baxter said.

‚??We were able to get first-hand feedback on what sort of space and work flow would work for first responders,‚?Ě he said.

The area provides a washing station, work space, nutritional area and a place for first responders to do required charting and paper work. The area is much better than what the previous space provided.

‚??It really is designed to allow them to be as effective and efficient as possible in their day-to-day activity,‚?Ě Baxter said. ‚??There was space, but it wasn‚??t as nice and it certainly didn‚??t allow for the same type of flow to support their work processes as this does.‚?Ě

St. Rita‚??s broke ground for the $8 million expansion and renovation project in the fall of 2011. It will be completed in January. The project adds 8,000 square feet and renovates the emergency department, which has not been updated since 1995.

Additional rooms will be 50 percent larger than current rooms. Each room will have medication administration equipment and digital capabilities for electronic medical records and other technology.

Improvements also include a shock trauma unit, mass casualty/Hazmat rooms and a meditation and grieving area.
