LIMA — Lima individuals and organizations alike were recognized for their dedication to helping children at the annual Community for Kids Breakfast on Thursday morning.
Longtime Family and Children First Council Coordinator Mary Early, who is set to retire at the end of next month, was one of six Friend of Children Awards recipients. She received a standing ovation when she walked to the stage to pick up her plaque.
“I will be passionate about families and children long after I leave,” she said. “We can’t work on little islands anymore. We are connected in many ways. We have to have the folks that work undercover to find out what’s going on in our world. We have to have parents in schools that care about their children. We have to have brothers and sisters that love one another.”
Other winners included Your Hometown Stations, SAFY Behavioral Health, West Central Ohio Crime Task Force, Partnership for Violence Free Families Director Donna Dickman and Lori Storer, a therapist and long time school volunteer.
Yvonne Jones, a parent liaison at North West Middle School, was awarded the Pinwheels Award.
Three local fifth graders were also present at the program to read their winning essays about their favorite person. Aizia Callahan, a Lima North student, wrote about her mother. Gavin Stewart, a Shawnee student, wrote about his little brother. And Jack Zerante, a St. Charles student, wrote about his big sister.
