LIMA — Lima’s two safety service chiefs are hoping the new year brings some new equipment for their departments.

Representatives from the Lima Police Department and Lima Fire Department made their pitch Wednesday night for capital projects as part of a budget review conducted by Lima City Council’s Finance Committee.

Police Chief Kevin Martin said while the purchase of 10 cruisers will be a benefit to both officer safety and general public safety, it isn’t critical the money — about $210,000 — be included in the initial budget council is considering.

“We have a vehicle fleet that is aging and the request is going to be for a total of 10 vehicles, five of those being marked police cars the other five being unmarked detective cars. We’re not looking for anything too elaborate,” Martin said. “The detective cars with the request we intend to make at mid-year will actually include us buying better used vehicles for the detectives as opposed to brand new ones. With the amount of driving time and the wear and tear the marked units have to take those will be new vehicles that we’ll be seeking.”

The police department’s request for just over $8 million is about $300,000 less than 2012 budget, Martin said.

At the Fire Department, Deputy Chief David McDermitt said an aging vehicle fleet is also prompting that department to seek capital dollars for vehicle replacement.

“The biggest thing for 2013 that we’d like to set aside money for is we really do need to purchase one additional engine for our department. That’s going to be roughly $450,000,” McDermitt said. “We look to possibly get that ordered late first or early second quarter and possibly take delivery late fall or early winter.

“Currently our fleet is aging. We have a reserve engine that is 21 years old we have another reserve engine that is 20 years old. Our front line fleet we have an engine that operates every day that is 15 years old and maintenance costs are beginning to increase drastically on that vehicle.”
