CELINA — A Fort Recovery High School teacher and coach is being charged with sexual battery and accused of having a three-year relationship with a female student, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.
Christopher A. Summers, 32, of St. Henry, was arrested on the charge, a third-degree felony, Tuesday, Sheriff Jeff Grey said. Summers is an accounting teacher at the high school and a former girls junior varsity basketball coach.
Grey said his office was contacted Monday afternoon around 3 p.m. by a female student and her family, whose name and age were not being released. Grey said Summers knew the girl from school and began a relationship with her that has lasted nearly three years.
The criminal acts happened at Summers’ St. Henry residence and at a hotel in a neighboring county, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office applied for and received a search warrant on Tuesday afternoon to search Summers’ residence, during which computers, cameras and additional equipment were seized.
“We have no reason to believe, at this point, that any of the criminal conduct occurred during school events or on school property,” Grey said. “Fort Recovery schools has cooperated fully and without hesitation.”
Grey said the investigation is continuing and his office has passed the charges off to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. The Prosecutor’s Ooffice is reviewing the case to see if additional charges need to be filed.
Fort Recovery Local Schools Superintendent Shelly Vaughn released a statement Wednesday concerning Summers’ status with the school system and would not comment further.
“We have been advised that Mr. Summers has been arrested by the Mercer County Sheriff’s office. Based upon this, Mr. Summers has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into this matter,” the statement reads. “Until such time as more facts are provided to the district, we are not in a position to provide further comment.”
Grey said at this point in the investigation, his office does not know of any additional victims. He said no further information was being released.
Summers was being held at the Mercer County Jail on the charge.
