LIMA — A man shot Wednesday after stabbing a police officer in the head remained in the hospital Monday.
John Heffner, 41, remained at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He is recovering from surgery after the officer he stabbed shot him twice, once in the torso and once in the shoulder.
Heffner is charged with felonious assault with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony.
Police said Heffner was suicidal and wanted to use an encounter with an officer to end his life, a phenomenon known as “suicide by cop.”
He showed at the Lima Police Department on Wednesday and summoned two officers outside. When they opened the door, he charged them from the street, about 40 feet away. He closed quickly on them enough to stab Sgt. Dave Gillispie in the head before Gillispie could stop him with his gun.
