LIMA A 14-year-old boy accused of shooting another teen in the head last summer has been indicted for murder. An Allen County grand jury, meeting Thursday, indicted Dederick Matthews Jr., who prosecutors say was the triggerman in the Aug. 30 shooting death of 16-year-old Eric Armstead.Matthews remains in custody of the Allen County Sheriff. Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Reed imposed a cash bond of $950,000. The case against Matthews, now 15, was moved to adult court after Allen County Juvenile Court Judge Glenn Derryberry determining Matthews did not stand a good chance of being rehabilitated in the juvenile justice system. As a juvenile, Matthews was facing incarceration until his 21st birthday. As an adult, however, he faces the possibility of spending 15 years to the rest of his life in prison.Juvenile co-defendant Ritchie Johnson, 17, is charged as an adult with complicity to murder. Officials said Johnson and three other teens were with Matthews when he fired shots at people on a porch at 620 Madison Ave., striking Armstead once in the head and killing him. Armstead had an ongoing feud with Matthews' group.A suppression hearing in Judge Reed's court is scheduled for Monday in Johnson's case.Prosecutors also are seeking to try 15-year-old Devontae Upshaw as an adult. He has a hearing later this month in Juvenile Court. Only one juvenile, Shaquille Bulls, has a case that is scheduled to stay in Juvenile Court in exchange for his cooperation against his co-defendants. Xavier Arrick was the only adult charged. He faces a murder charge but that is expected to change because he is cooperating with prosecutors and has agreed to testify against his co-defendants. A motion for modification of Arrick's $500,000 bond was filed in court on Thursday. You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
