LIMA Proceeds from a drive-through lunch Saturday at St. Rose Catholic Church will help a parish family pay the mounting medical bills for its 10-year-old son's extended hospital treatments. The lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 523 N. West St. Members of St. Rose Parish Service League are preparing the meals that will include beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce and a roll. Proceeds benefit Matthew Moritz, son of David and Kimberly Moritz, of Lafayette. A fourth-grader at Allen East Elementary School, Matthew was diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy. While recovering at home from a routine surgery in November, Matthew began displaying signs of a secondary medical issue. After several weeks of emergency room and hospital visits, Matthew was diagnosed with a viral infection of the brain. The life-threatening infection compromised his ability to eat, breathe and communicate. After two months at Dayton Children's Hospital, Matthew returned home in early February, but the family anticipates months and possibly years of nursing care and home therapy in his rehabilitation. An avid sports fan, Matthew is widely known as a fixture on the sidelines of Allen East Mustangs sporting events, watching and helping his dad coach football and girls basketball. He has excelled in school, participated in equestrian therapy at Fassett Farm and The Allen County Abilities Baseball League, and charmed more than a few with his grin and his sense of humor. He has a 7-year-old sister, Emma.Cost of the drive-through lunch is $7. Participants are asked to enter the church parking lot from North West Street and exit onto McDonel Street. The St. Rose Service League is an organization open to any interested parishioner of any age. Its serves the parish as needed and as requested. The group serves funeral meals for parish families requesting them. Members also host a Christmas bazaar that enables children of St. Rose School to shop for useful, inexpensive gifts for their family members. For information about the benefit lunch or the St. Rose Service League, call Lorraine Bresler at 419-228-4495.
