DELPHOS — Ryan and Kristen Karhoff spent their first wedding anniversary in the hospital. The couple have also spent much of their 3-month-old son's life away from him as Dad battles leukemia.“They are very strong people, we have found that out throughout this,” said Sue Ricker, Kristen's mother. “There are times when it gets to them, being apart from the kids and with such a young baby. But they are also being positive.” The Delphos couple also have two other children, both age 5. Between hospital visits locally and soon to Columbus, Karhoff hasn't been able to work.A luau-themed benefit will be held Saturday at Keith's Landeck Tavern. Pork dinners for $8 will be available from 4 to 8 p.m., and the band Moderate Pain, of Fort Wayne, Ind., will play from 8 p.m. to midnight. The night will also feature $1 draft beer, a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction. The auction will include Indy 500 VIP Experience package, Detroit Tigers tickets, Brickyard 400 VIP Experience package, Cedar Point tickets and a set of Michelin Tires.Karhoff, 27, had been healthy all his life, Ricker said. After feeling ill and exhausted for a couple of weeks, he went to the doctor in early June. He was sent immediately to a cancer doctor and to St. Rita's Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with Acute Monocytic Leukemia.“He had only been feeling ill for a couple of weeks. ... They had no clue that was what it was,” Ricker said. Karhoff has spent several stints in the hospital receiving chemotherapy, blood transfusions and bone marrow tests. He will head soon to the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University to begin the process of qualifying for and receiving a bone marrow transplant.Ricker said recovery from the transplants could take many months, saying the family worries about when Karhoff would be able to go back to work.
